When Alex walks in a couple of hours later I have three pages left.

“Hey,” He says.

“Hey.” I answer half-heartedly still completely engrossed by the story that’s wrapping up.

A couple minutes later I smile and really say hello. I look up to find that Alex stares at me. “What are you doing?” I ask him.

“Watching you.” He says and my cheeks warm. “You’re the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.”

I have to look away. “You’re crazy.” I shake my head.

“No.” Alex takes my hand. “If you don’t see it then you’re crazy.” Alex says.

I roll my eyes. “Whatever. How was the whole lunch thing?” I try to change the subject.

Alex takes the bait. “Good—great actually. I don’t know if it’s because it’s the first time or because it’s Sunday, but we were packed. My parents are impressed.”

“That’s good.” I smile.

“Yeah,” Alex tugs me into him. “Plus it frees up my evenings.”

“That’s even better.” I grin.

“How was lunch with Hawke?”

“Okay—even though my boyfriend’s a big fat blabbermouth.” My tone only half-teases.

Alex flinches. “Yeah...there’s only so much I can do. Besides, Hawke is really...” He searches for the word.

“Pushy?” I offer. “Annoying?”

“Perceptive.” Alex finishes. “But a big yes to what you said, too.” He adds.

“I gave him this thing that Julie gave me—I’d all but forgotten about it.” I say when Alex looks a bit hurt. “It’s just some old ass police report. It looked like a rape charge against Peter Walker, but it was too old to matter anymore.”

“Hopefully Hawke can get some answers.” Alex says. “He seems to really want to help.”

I consider his words. Hawke is a pushy pain in my ass, but he has kept every promise he’s ever made me—which is more than I can say for almost everyone else. “Yeah, I guess he does. He seems just as frustrated as we are with Henry’s situation.”

“It’s a shitty one.” Alex agrees.

I realize that I also never told Alex about the extra dough the Walker’s threw onto my “reward” money. I figure I better do it now before I forget again and he gets that you-just-killed-my-puppy look in his fucking eyes again. “C’mon,” I stand and tug on his hand. “I have to show you something.”

“I like the sound of that.” Alex’s eyes light up and he rises.

“Not that.” I smack his arm. “Hurry before I forget again.”

We go into my room and I rifle through things until I successfully find the thick envelope I search for. I hand it to Alex and watch as he reads through it. It’s easy to tell when he gets to the bottom because his eyes about pop out of his head.

“Holy shit!” Alex says. “I thought they said fifty—this is way more than that.”

“I know. I can’t figure out why other than they want to shut me up.”

Alex looks at me with fear in his eyes. “Then they know that you know.”

I’m sure the look in my eyes is similar to Alex’s. “That’s my assumption.”

Alex shoves the paper back into the envelope. “Does Hawke know?”

“I just now thought to tell you.
